Thrice

Some months back, Todd discovered the word "thrice". I explained what it meant, and we enjoyed talking about it--"once, twice, thrice." It really is a handy word, and Todd now puts it to use quite often.

For example, this morning we were talking about a book Todd got for Christmas. I haven't had a chance to read it yet. Todd told me that it was a pretty easy book to read, and he had already read it at least twice or thrice.

His use of this word made me both excited for him that he has been able to make it an active part of his vocabulary and sad for him when he eventually discovers that nobody uses the word "thrice" anymore. And why don't we? What a shame that we reject perfectly good words such as "thrice" lest we sound snooty.

[It makes me curious. Do you ever use the word "thrice"? What words do you wish were more often used in the modern English language? And why do you think they have fallen out of favor?]
